Acupuncture

At Levittown Animal Hospital, we pride ourselves on providing the highest level of veterinary care for Nassau County’s pets. As veterinary science research continues to grow, experts have discovered just how effective certain complementary therapies, such as acupuncture, can be in treating pain and other symptoms in many pets. Acupuncture is the ancient art of inserting very fine needles into specific points on the body to produce a healing response.

In order to determine if your pet is a good candidate for acupuncture, during an initial consultation appointment we will take a thorough history of your pet that takes into account all aspects of their life including diet, exercise, chronic medical concerns, and their daily lifestyle with you. Treatments are typically 20-30 minutes once a week, then as time goes on and the patient improves, treatments become more spaced out until maintenance is reached.

What is veterinary acupuncture used for?

Veterinary Acupuncture can be used to treat a wide array of conditions and is frequently used in performance competition events. If your pet is experiencing any of the following issues below, please reach out to us to see if acupuncture is right for your pet.

  • Arthritis & Joint Inflammation
  • Neurologic Disorders
  • Reproductive Disorders
  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Degenerative Joint Disease
  • Gastrointestinal Disorders
  • Paralysis
  • Muscle Injuries

How does veterinary acupuncture work?

Acupuncture causes a therapeutic effect by inserting sterile, thin needles into specific and discrete points on your pet's body. Studies have shown that acupuncture releases endorphins and natural pain relievers in order to block various pathways within the pain cycle.

Is it for my pet?

If your pet suffers from anxiety, pain, stress, arthritis, ACL/knee surgery recovery, spinal pain, or other diseases, acupuncture may be a helpful treatment option.

Is it safe?

When administered by a licensed, Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA), acupuncture is considered to be a safe and effective treatment option for pets. Sedation is rarely needed.

Does it hurt?

Generally, pets are very comfortable during a treatment session and often fall asleep or lay down during this relaxing therapy technique.

What are the results?

Veterinary acupuncture may alleviate pain while improving joint range of motion. While results may vary, we can manage and stabilize many conditions. We can decide how to best manage your pet at your first evaluation.

K-Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is effective in the treatment of skin conditions, mouth and ear infections, arthritis, soft tissue injury, post-surgical pain, and various other conditions. Treatment is totally safe, painless, and requires no anesthesia. It works by stimulating the production of cellular energy in impaired cells and enhances the permeability of the cell membrane. Simply, this promotes faster and higher-quality healing, increases nutrient and waste exchange across cell membranes, and enhances elasticity of damaged tissues.

Therapeutic effects are achieved by using specific wavelengths of light during treatment. These therapeutic effects include faster healing time, reduced pain, and greater circulation and less swelling.

Laser Therapy is effective in treating:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Joint Pain
  • Post
  • Surgical Pain
  • Edema and Congestion
  • Tendinopathies
  • Ligament Sprains
  • Muscle strains
  • Puncture wounds
  • Post- traumatic injury
  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Neck and back pain
  • Burns
  • Rehabilitation
  • Chronic Wounds
  • Post-Orthopedic Surgical Recovery

Since Levittown Animal Hospital is equipped with a K-Laser and our veterinarians are trained to operate it, we encourage you to give us a call so that we can devise the best treatment plan for your pet’s specific needs.

Cryotherapy

Levittown Animal Hospital is always looking for new ways to provide patients with unbeatable clinical care. That’s why our medical team is proud to offer Cryotherapy as an advanced, alternative treatment for pets!

What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is a non-invasive and non-traumatic technique that effectively treats an array of skin conditions without the need for anesthesia or traditional surgery. This makes the treatment process much less painful for your pet and affordable for you! Cryotherapy effectively treats skin disorders such as tumors, cysts, growths, and skin tags, and can also help treat certain cancers.

What To Expect

Dr. Funk is highly trained to perform Cryotherapy. Treatments are performed with a CryoProbe, which is a modern instrument that freeze-dries problem areas on the skin. The extremely cold temperature of liquid nitrogen freezes nerve endings so pets experience minimal discomfort during treatment and afterwards during recovery.

Treatment sessions typically take five minutes, and are recommended once a week until the mass or growth diminishes in size or falls off. In most cases, by the second or third treatment, significant progress is made. The number of treatments depends on the severity of the skin condition. Our medical team will work with you to devise a treatment plan that is best for your pet.

Treatment Benefits

Pets of all ages and health statuses can benefit from treatment. It’s important to address abnormal growths and skin conditions early on to prevent further infection and complications. Thanks to Cryotherapy, treatment and healing is a breeze.

Cryotherapy benefits pets and pet owners alike. Here’s how:

  • Minimal Pain
  • Non-invasive
  • Fast Recovery
  • Cost-Conscious
  • Safer than Surgery, especially for geriatric and sensitive pets
